A new report indicates that some shower curtains contain large amounts of toxic chemicals.
A new report indicates that some shower curtains contain large amounts of toxic chemicals. The report released by the Virginia based national environmental organisation, Center for Health, Environment & Justice reveals that the shower curtains that were tested contained chemicals that are known to be harmful to nervous system and respiratory and reproductive tracts.
An additional concern was that one of the principle bases of PVC (polyvinyl chloride) is vinyl chloride and this is recognised as being a liver cancer-causing carcinogen. Many shower curtains are made of PVC. These curtains can expose you to more toxic chemicals than you would be exposed to in most other circumstances.
This is why you can feel as if you've been hit by a cloud of fumes when you hang up a new shower curtain. You literally have. The report co-author Michael Schade says "This smell can make you feel sick, give you a headache, make you feel nauseous or (cause) other health effects."
Some of the chemicals found in the tested shower curtains are categorised as hazardous air pollutants by the Environmental Protection Agency. One of the curtains tested that was discovered to be especially bad gave off a cocktail of 108 volatile organic compounds that still hung in the air for up to a month!
Four Major bath and shower retailers in the Colchester have opted to offer Shower Save services to their customers.
‘Although some manufacturers offer the ‘easy clean' surface as an optional extra most customers choose not to take it at the time of purchase' says Graham Bond, Showroom Manager, of Falcon Plumbing and Heating Supplies ‘it is only after a few months when the limescale is effecting the surface of their shower enclosure they appreciate the benefit of having ‘non-stick' glass. Now we are able to offer a service that carries out the treatment retrospectively in our customer's homes without any upheaval or removal of glass. We believe this is a great benefit to our customers'
Shower Save’s Application team were asked to treat all the shower enclosures and bath screens, at the Hotel Continental – Harwich. Despite this being a busy period, the work in all rooms was done with the minimum of disruption to the hotel and its guests.
Initially stained and marked glass was renovated with specialist products before the ‘non-stick’ finish was hand-applied. Once treated the shower glass and bath screens have a sparkling, stain-resistant surface that will retain its visual appeal for much longer.
The bathrooms now benefit from the same non-stick and hygienic surfaces as shared by many top London hotels. The hotel’s housekeeping team, who expressed delight in the ‘new’ easy clean surfaces, immediately noted the difference.
“We had difficulty in keeping our 14 shower screens free from water stains and limescale but since treatment with Shower Save our cleaners are very happy because they no longer have to use chemicals, a plus for the environment as well as our pocket; and it is now easy for them to achieve a brilliantly clean, as new, sparkling result. “ Kathryn Hoyles, Owner, Hotel Continental.
